Unlike Apple, it released its mobile OS under open source licenses, allowing device makers to modify it. This disconnected approach helped Android become the most popular computing platform on Earth, but it's been hard to reach Apple levels of polish and consistency. Google has attempted to centralize chunks of Android to address this over the years, and a major component called ART is set to get this treatment in Android 12. The result could be vastly improved app compatibility, which is sure to make everyone happy.  Until a few years ago, every update to Android phones required rebuilding the OS from scratch with Google's latest codebase. That started to change with the addition of Project Treble in Android 8.0 Oreo. This architectural change makes vendor code forward-compatible so new OS updates can plug in

If you need to migrate your data or are looking to keep a backup handy, you can clone your hard drive. Here's how to do it in Windows and on a Mac. By Whitson Gordon There are plenty of great services that can back up your files, but sometimes you need something a bit more bulletproof. Maybe you're migrating your Windows installation to a new drive, or perhaps you want a complete one-to-one copy in case anything goes wrong. In those cases, your best bet is to clone your hard drive, creating an exact copy you can swap in and boot up right away. Some backup services, like IDrive and Acronis, have built-in disk-cloning features, supplementing to the normal file backup. We'll be using some free tools designed specifically for drive cloning in this guide, though. If you want a true backup solution with supplemental cloning features, check out one of the paid options. But for one-off clones (like if you're migrating your OS to a new drive), these tools will be all you

Best disk cloning software of 2020: clone your hard drive as a backup - Techradar

The ideal disk cloning software will allow you to easily clone your hard disk drive (or solid state drive) as a backup. There are a number of reasons why you might want to do this, but the main one is likely for providing a copy in case of emergency or unforeseen circumstances. Best disk cloning software of 2020 Cloning a hard drive allows you to make a full and faithful copy of it, so that in the event that the original hard drive fails you can swap it out for the clone. This helps avoid the need to completely reinstall system software and copy across all data, allowing you to continue to work much more quickly. A backup drive could be set up and cloned within your existing PC chassis, or you could set it up as an external drive to allow you to store it off-premises as needed. 5 Best free software for disk imaging or cloning hard drives - H2S Media

Byword cloning, it is absolutely clear what is the purpose of hard drive cloning software in both free and paid categories. Such kind of software allows users to create an exact copy of their whole hard drive or individual portions which not only includes files and folders even the operating system. For example, if you have cloned or created an image of your Windows 10, 8 or 7… or Linux such as Ubuntu installed partition then in the future if something happened to your current OS partition, say a hard drive failure, then you can restore the disk image on your new hard drive to get exactly the state of the OS partition when you have created its image. After creating a hard drive copy, we can transfer the image to removable devices such as USB drives, hard drives, NAS, or DVDs for more security and protection. This avoids the hassle of installing the whole OS and software over it. Furthermore, we can also use to copy the OS its installed software and content to multiple machi

Android Runtime becoming a Project Mainline module for easy updates in Android 12 - Android Police

Image
Google introduced Project Mainline as part of Android 10, to turn some of Android into modular components that could be updated through the Play Store. Several more parts of the system were converted to Mainline modules with Android 11, and now another core Android component is expected to become modular next year. New comments on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code repository reveal that the Android Runtime is expected to become a Project Mainline module, starting with Android 12. The runtime, also known as 'ART,' is the environment used for running all applications on Android with ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation. You long-term Android nerds out there might remember that ART became the new default runtime in Android Lollipop, replacing the 'Dalvik' engine that Oracle is still suing Google over. One comment from Google software engineer Orion Hodson spells out that ART will be a Mainline module in Android 12: Sorry, this CL should have come with mo

Project Latte by Microsoft aims to bring Android apps to Windows and the Microsoft Store - XDA Developers

Image
Just the other day, we reported Microsoft was considering adding Android apps to Windows in 2021. Today, more details about the initiative have come to light, giving us a better idea of how everything will work. Internally referred to as Latte, the project will allow app developers to bring their Android apps to Windows 10 with little to no code changes, according to Windows Central . Developers would submit them through the Microsoft Store packaged as MSIX. The project will reportedly be powered by Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). However, Microsoft will allegedly need to provide its own Android subsystem for Android apps to run. Importantly, Project Latte is said to lack support for Google Play Services, so apps that require any API provided by Play Services will need to be updated to ensure proper functionality on Windows 10. Without Play Services support, apps could potentially not work properly or have poor functionality (like no push notifications). Apps will likely need to

With the recent release of M1-powered Apple Macs and MacBooks that are capable of running iOS apps, it seems as though on the PC side of the fence we may soon see something similar occur. According to Windows Central , Microsoft's "Project Latte" could see Android apps run on Windows. So some of your reading will no doubt be saying that you can already do this. Yes, you sort of can thanks to the Link to Windows feature with the Your Phone app that is available on certain Samsung Galaxy hardware. This implementation isn't always the most reliable, with disconnects and issues meaning that the experience can be a little temperamental. Project Latte would effectively allow developers to port their Android apps to Windows 10 with very little extra work required. Plus, this could even open up an extended marketplace for developers looking to increase their install base. Android apps on Windows will require the utilization of Windows Subsystem for Linux plus an add
