Apple Releases IOS 5.1 [Direct Links, Screenshots]
Apple just released the new version of iOS, iOS 5.1, through Software Update. Notable new features in this update include Siri support for Japanese users, a new camera shortcut, and new Camera app for iPad. Full changelog below.
This update contains improvements and bug fixes, including:
At the moment of writing this, the update server can't be reached with iTunes, but the over-the-air update is working through iOS devices. We'll update this story with more details as we install iOS 5.1 on our devices.
Direct LinksiOS 5.1 direct download links below (build number 9B176). We should also note that new devices have appeared in Apple's firmware server: iPad 2,4, iPad 3,1, iPad 3,2, iPad 3,3.
iPhone ScreenshotsI have installed iOS 5.1 on my iPhone 4S, and it does indeed come with a new Lock screen camera shortcut, possibility to delete Photo Stream entries – but it also breaks Settings URLs in apps like Launch Center, as previously reported. Siri is now available in Japanese, too. The new Camera icon in the Lock screen is always visible, and users can "drag" the Camera icon to show the entire camera view.
Screenshots below.
iPad ScreenshotsWe've been able to test iOS 5.1 on our iPad 2s, and we've included screenshots of the new features, as reported in the changelog. Overall, I can say the device feels a lot snappier with this final build of iOS 5.1 – especially Safari, and this might be related to an updated version of WebKit being used in iOS 5.1.
IOS 17.6: Apple Releases Urgent IPhone Update With 2 New Features
Update July 31 with details of an extra new feature coming with iOS 17.6.
The latest iPhone update is here and it may be the last one before iOS 18 lands. As you'd expect, much of it is about bug fixes—there are almost three dozen of those—but there was a new feature in the mix, too, called Catch Up, for the TV app. More on that below.
Is iOS 17.6 the last iPhone update in this cycle?

By which I mean, this new feature is for users in Japan only. And don't be jealous, it's a feature you may have already. It's Emergency SOS via satellite, something which arrived on the iPhone 14 in 2022, but this highly useful emergency extra was originally for the U.S. And Canada only and spread to other countries later. Now, it's coming to Japan as part of the iOS 17.6 update.
As pointed out by Juli Clover at MacRumors, "Japan has several different emergency contact numbers, and all of them work with Emergency SOS via satellite, including 119 for contacting fire and ambulance services, 110 for contacting the police, and 118 for contacting the coast guard. Satellite connectivity can also be used for updating Find My location when out of range of cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. The feature works for people living in Japan, as well as visitors to the country."
While many of us are waiting for the launch of iOS 18 in a few weeks' time, Apple reminds us that it's still got eyes on iOS 17. The latest iOS 17.6 release may be the last major update before iOS 18, though we mustn't rule out surprise bug squishes that mean iOS 17.6.1 or similar will still happen. Here's what's in the new release, including probably the last new feature of the iOS 17 cycle.
And let's remember, it's been a long time since the last time Apple updated the iPhone software. After iOS 17.5 on May 13, came the very swift minor update, iOS 17.5.1, a week later. Since then, nothing.
There was almost going to be another, apparently, which would have been iOS 17.5.2, though this was ditched—full details of that here.
ForbesApple iPhone 16 Pro: New Leak Reveals Powerful Design Upgrade Incoming, Report SaysBy David Phelan Which iPhones Can Run iOS 17.6?The iPhones that can run iOS 17 stretch back to the 2018 releases: iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and iPhone XR. All iPhones since then are also compatible. That means the iPhone 11 series, iPhone 12 series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 14 series and iPhone 15 series. It also includes iPhone SE second- and third-generation models.
How To Get ItIn case the time that's elapsed since iOS 17.5.1 means you're a little rusty, this is how you update: open the Settings app, click on General, then Software Update. Here you can choose to download the new software immediately, which will usually mean it's on your iPhone sooner. Pick Download and Install, and you'll be set up soon enough. In terms of download size, iOS 17.6 was 1GB on my iPhone 15 Pro Max.
What's In The ReleaseThis update is mostly about bug fixes—35 in total—and Apple's notes are basic: "This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users."
But that doesn't mean there are no new features. There's one, to be exact. It's Catch Up, a feature for the Apple TV app designed to benefit sports viewers.
Specifically, it's for live streaming sports in the MLS Season Pass. The feature was announced in June and it means that if you're joining a live stream for a game that's already started, you can see a series of highlights from earlier in the game. The Key Plays carousel is available during a game that's in progress and also from video player controls menu afterwards.
If one new feature seems parsimonious, it's because Apple has delivered everything it promised in iOS 17 already.
Unless iOS 17.7 is a thing, which we'll know about in a few days when the first developer beta lands, it's now full steam ahead towards iOS 18.
4 Reasons Not To Install IOS 17.6 & 11 Reasons You Should
If security is important to you, think about installing Apple's iOS 17.6 update right away.
iOS 17.6 features 30 security patches and they will help keep your device and its data protected from harm. That makes iOS 17.6 an important download.
If you missed iOS 17.5 or older software, you'll get patches from the updates you skipped with your upgrade.
iOS 17.5 delivered 15 security patches, the iOS 17.4.1 update included two security patches, and iOS 17.4 had four security patches on board.
The update also delivered quantum security protection for iMessage. The company says the upgrade gives iMessage "the strongest security properties of any at-scale messaging protocol in the world."
The iOS 17.3 update brought 15 new security patches to iPhone. The software also added Stolen Device Protection to iPhone.
It increases the security of your iPhone and Apple ID by requiring Face ID or Touch ID to gain access to passwords, make purchases in Safari, and more. This is useful if someone gets access to your iPhone and its passcode.
iOS 17.2 delivered 10 new security patches to iPhone. If you wish to find out more, you can head on over to Apple's security site for the details.
iOS 17.2 also included iMessage Contact Key Verification which improves the security of iMessage. The company also fixed an exploit that let the Flipper Zero multi-tool lock up iPhones.
iOS 17.1.2 had two security patches on board. Both were related to WebKit. If you want to learn more, you can do so right here.
iOS 17.1 brought 18 security fixes to iPhone. It addressed issues within Weather, Status Bar, WebKit, and more.
iOS 17.0.3 brought two patches for two security issues Apple identified within the software. If you want to read about the patches, head here.
iOS 17.0.1 delivered three important patches to iPhone. If you're interested in the exact nature of these improvements, you can read about them over on Apple's security website.
As for iOS 17 itself, it brought 40+ new security patches with it. A staggering number to say the least. If you want to learn more about them, head over to Apple.
In addition to those patches, iOS 17 brings some additional enhancements to privacy and security including improvements to Communication Safety beyond Messages.
It now includes content sent by AirDrop, Contact Posters in the Phone app, FaceTime, and the systemwide photo picker. You now have an option to blur out sensitive photos and videos before you choose to view them.
There's also an expanded Lockdown Mode which will help protect you against cyber attacks.
Apple's also improved sharing permissions and you now have more control over what you share with the apps on your device.
The company also notes that starting in iOS 17, Voice Memos encrypts the titles of recordings stored in iCloud, in addition to the recordings themselves.
If you skipped older versions of iOS, you'll get the security patches from those updates with your iOS 17.6 update as well.
